A Nevada County captain passed out behind the wheel of a fire engine on March 7, according to The Union of Grass Valley.
Nevada County Consolidated Fire Chief Tim Fike told the newspaper that Capt. Bruce Niederberger was en route to the hospital to pickup his partner at approximately 10:30 a.m. when he "started to get tunnel vision."
"He passed out" after turning on the siren and jamming his foot on the brake, Fike said.

Mar. 8--Robert Rowe was pained to see a Sunday newspaper photo of his former church engulfed in flames.
Rowe had been a lifelong member of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church in the 1300 block of Constitution Ave. in New Kensington. Fire destroyed the vacant building late Saturday. It was the last site of the church before the congregation merged with the Bethel AME Church in Tarentum.
"St James was the first black church in New Kensington, and other churches branched off St. James," Rowe said.

Mar. 8--A meth lab led to a fire that caused significant damage at a Tulsa hotel and sent guests scrambling Sunday night, according to authorities.
The flames destroyed 11 units at the America's Value Inn, where investigators later discovered meth-related items, Fire Department spokesman Bill French said.
Firefighters arrived at the motel in the 10100 block of East 11th Street about 9:10 p.m. to find flames billowing from the first and second floors.

Firefighters blamed a buildup of methane gas for a series of explosions that blew at least three manhole covers into the air Sunday night along Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker.
Southbound lanes of Lawrenceville Highway near Jimmy Carter Boulevard were still closed on Monday morning.

More than a year after Lt. Kevin Kelley was killed when Boston Fire Ladder 26 slammed into a building, an internal investigation into the crash has been completed.
The
report released by the
Boston Fire Department's Board of Inquiry, made up of union firefighters and civilian staffers, agreed with many of the findings of the district attorney, including that the cause of the crash was brake failure.

Firefighters worked for several hours Saturday to contain a fire on the campus of Winthrop University.
Officials said the fire started around 3 p.m. in the attic of Owens Hall. York County Emergency Management officials said the fire posed some challenges because crews had to break open the roof in several places to find the flames.
"It's quite scary actually knowing it's one of the newer buildings on campus," said freshman Miguel Martinez. Firefighters worked late into the night to put out hot spots.

Mar. 7--A small plane made an emergency landing in the Arkansas River on Saturday afternoon near the 71st Street bridge.
The pilot, Luke Galan, 19, and passenger Homer Woolslayer, 38, were not injured when their single-engine Cessna lost power and came down in the river before it could land at Jones Riverside Airport, authorities said.
The two men were on a sandbar in the river for about 30 minutes before firefighters used a rescue boat to bring them to shore.

Three firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries this morning after a fire engine ladder touched a power line, causing the truck to become electrified and a tire to explode.
The firefighters were testing equipment around 10:30 a.m. at Station 51, located at 6902 Bellaire Blvd. in southwest Houston.
When the ladder briefly touched the power line, some sparks flew up and other firefighters came over to see what was going on, a Houston Fire Department spokeswoman said.

A massive fire overnight destroyed an old airplane hangar in south Kansas City.
The hangar, located on 155th Street just west of U.S. Highway 71, was formerly used to house B-52 bombers, but it was currently being used as a storage facility for hay.
Kansas City firefighters put water on the blaze when they arrived, but as the fire grew, they decided to let it burn itself out since there were no homes or other buildings in the area.

Firefighters said one person was airlifted to a hospital after fire destroyed a home that was also used as a child care center.
Crews were called to the home at 2421 Harper St. at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday. The fire quickly warranted a second alarm, firefighters said.
Firefighters said the first crew on the scene found an unconscious person inside the building. The occupant was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., with critical injuries.

A man who crashed his snowmobile into a tree in Maine has died - along with a fire department chief who was on his way to rescue him.
The Maine Warden Service says Jason Dodge was snowmobiling with his brother Friday night when he crashed into a fir tree on a groomed trail in The Forks, an area noted for its camping and other outdoor activities.

A fire raged inside the Tyson Foods plant on the southwest side of Logansport Friday morning, forcing about 1,000 workers out of the building.
Crews from several fire departments and numerous police officers were sent to the scene just after 9 a.m.
The Logansport Police Department said the blaze was large, but it was brought under control by 11 a.m.
Workers were evacuated and were still outside the building at 11:30 a.m.

Mar. 5--Nearly a dozen Portage County fire departments battled a blaze early this morning at a storage facility that houses a combustible mix of plastic pallets and other items in Ravenna.
Kent Fire Chief Jim Williams was injured when he was struck in the face by a large nozzle attached to a deluge gun -- a water cannon -- Ravenna Fire Chief Geoffrey Cleveland said this morning.
Williams was transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Information on his condition was not immediately known.

Mar. 4--Upon request, Alfred Goodman Sr. would pull out his medals and show them to anyone interested in learning about his stint in the Army.
Goodman, 61, lost both his legs fighting during the Vietnam War but he cherished his time in the service.
"He was proud," said Edward Carter, a long-time family friend. "And he just showed me his Purple Heart [Thursday]."
