That is the question that Ogden officials must answer as they seek to rapidly raze 38 abandoned homes in Ogden's Riverfront redevelopment zone.

Ogden Fire Chief Mike Mathieu recently received the nod from the state Division of Air Quality to use the structures for live-fire training.

Oregon Boy Hurt in Fire Pit Explosion

GRESHAM, Ore.

A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized Friday night after an explosion at a backyard fire pit in Gresham.

Firefighters were called to the home on Couch Court after a report of the explosion at 8:50 p.m. A Gresham fire spokesman said someone caused the explosion by throwing an object into the fire pit.

The boy suffered burns to his arms and face, fire officials said.

Doug Nelson, who lives nearby, said he heard the explosion.

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. --

For McGrady Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Lane, fighting fires was a family affair.

Lane's stepson, 19-year-old Allen Matheson, followed in his father's footsteps, working his way to corporal in the department.

But it wasn't a fire that ended Matheson's life. He and three friends, who were also volunteer firefighters with MVFD, were driving on Mountain Valley Church Road Monday evening when the driver, Adam Burke, lost control of the vehicle and plowed into another vehicle.

July 08--A North Babylon firefighter suffered second and third-degree burns Wednesday when a fire engine valve spewed hot steam onto his chest and arms while fighting a landfill fire in East Northport.

North Babylon Fire Chief John Schneidawin said the firefighter's injuries are not life-threatening and that he was in good spirits at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Utah Chief Wants to Burn Homes

July 08--OGDEN -- The Ogden Fire Department wants to burn vacant homes in the Ogden River Project area for training purposes and is asking the city council to allocate $564,000 to complete demolition of the dwellings.

Funding for demolition and debris removal could come from Business Depot Ogden lease revenues, said Fire Chief Mike Mathieu. About 40 vacant houses within the river project boundaries are owned by Ogden Riverfront Development Company, a firm managed by developer Gadi Leshem.

Massachusetts Revokes 211 EMT Licenses in Training Record Scam

BOSTON -- The state revoked the licenses of 211 EMTs after an investigation revealed they held falsified training records. The EMTs, who work for 10 private and 14 municipal ambulance services across the state, face license revocations ranging from 45 days to nine months, according to state officials.

Jun. 17--It's only a drill.

At the same time that President Barack Obama is flying into Port Columbus Friday, emergency crews will be practicing their response to a major catastrophe across town at Rickenbacker International Airport.

The mass-casualty drill is required every three years as part of the airport's certification and has been planned for more than a year, said Angie Tabor, a spokeswoman for the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, which operates both airports.

The Weirton fire chief spoke out in response to poor ratings cast on the department through a mock disaster drill.

According to the United States Regulatory commission, the firefighters fell short on April 20 during a drill simulating a radiological disaster at the Beaver Valley plant in Pennsylvania.

Jun. 7--NORWICH -- The tanker truck had pulled up too far away from the line of holding tanks Sunday morning, causing about half of his load to spill onto Scotland Road in Yantic.

Earlier, a Yantic firefighter was injured when a hose he was standing near was turned on without him realizing, leaving him reeling on the pavement. That firefighter was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital for evaluation.
