Kansas City firefighters had to rescue Wednesday evening the occupants of several cars who were swept off Amity Road in the Northland.
The cars wound up in the parking lot of a nature center, Kansas City Fire Department spokesman Joe Vitale told KMBC.com.
Heavy rains forced waters over a small bridge over Amity Road near Missouri 152, Vitale said. Most of Amity was under water and several cars were swept into the parking lot.

May 25--A kayaker who fell into the Arkansas River on Monday was pronounced dead at a Tulsa hospital after rescue crews pulled him from the water.
The 35-year-old man, who was not identified Monday pending notification of his relatives, was kayaking alone when he went over the Zink Lake low-water dam under the pedestrian bridge near 31st Street and Riverside Drive about 10:30 a.m., Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Bill French said.

May 25--A casual weekend softball game among local firefighters quickly became serious over the weekend after one firefighter was knocked unconscious by a softball, and a second firefighter was struck by a car while rushing to get medical equipment to aid him, police said.
Islip Terrace firefighter Robert Powers Jr. was taken to a hospital for treatment of a broken leg, police said, and John Mendoza, 35, also of Islip Terrace, was also treated. Neither injury was life-threatening, police said.

When Lakeville Fire Chief Scott Nelson arrived at a multivehicle crash on Interstate 35 late Monday morning, a black cloud hovered overhead.
He didn't know what it was.
"But I found out real quick," Nelson said. "I opened my door and got stung in the face."
Thousands of honeybees had escaped from a truck, one of two semitrailers and two automobiles involved in an 11:30 a.m. crash near County Road 70 that killed the drivers of the two cars.
