Aug. 21--SPRING HILL -- She stood on the front porch and was disgusted by the sight of her cracked stucco walls.
That wasn't even the worst of it.
The front west corner of Mary Schwabebauer's house was mangled. The roof shingles were dangling and the walls were dented.
The inside was exposed to the rain. She was using a tarp to protect her floor Saturday morning.

Aug. 22--An accidental fire at a Shirley home injured three people and several rescuers, Suffolk police said Saturday night.
All were treated for smoke inhalation and other non-life-threatening injures, a police department spokesman said.
The cause of the 5:30 p.m. fire, on Van Buren Street, was still being investigated, the spokesman said.
The injured, including a police officer and firefighters, were taken to hospitals; their conditions were not immediately available.

Aug. 22--Redlands Firefighters broke apart a concrete wall Thursday evening to free a dog whose head was trapped between bricks.
When firefighters arrived on scene at the 600 block of Monterey Street, they found the dog's head stuck in a lattice-style concrete wall, according to Battalion Chief Jim Topoleski. Preston the Dalmatian had been stuck for over an hour.

WELLINGTON, Fla. --
Rescue officials in Wellington said a grandmother accidentally locked her keys in her car with her grandchildren in it Friday afternoon.
Crews ultimately smashed a window to get the children out of the hot car.
The children were put in a rescue truck to cool down. They were not injured.
Officials said the woman waited to call 911 because she was waiting for her daughter to bring her a spare set of keys.

The fire started, family members believe, when a propane tank on a grill exploded, destroying the house. However, firefighters haven't yet released an official cause of the fire. Two firefighters, Lt. Brian Cooke and Capt. Danny Skinner, were injured in the fire, according to fire officials. Their injuries were not life threatening.

A battalion chief for the South Metro Fire Department was injured in a car crash while responding to a fire in Englewood Saturday morning.
The crash happened at S. Logan Street and E. Jefferson Avenue. The battalion chief was taken to a hospital for treatment. He was released later Saturday morning, said a South Metro Fire spokesman.
Two other people in the other vehicle were taken to the hospital as well. Their conditions were not released.

A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized Friday night after an explosion at a backyard fire pit in Gresham.
Firefighters were called to the home on Couch Court after a report of the explosion at 8:50 p.m. A Gresham fire spokesman said someone caused the explosion by throwing an object into the fire pit.
The boy suffered burns to his arms and face, fire officials said.
Doug Nelson, who lives nearby, said he heard the explosion.

Thirteen people were hurt Friday night when two cars collided in Canby, where the Clackamas County Fair is being held this weekend.
Fire officials from the Canby Fire Department said a van with eight people inside and a SUV with five teenagers inside crashed at the intersection of New Era and Central Point roads just before 8 p.m.
One of the vehicles failed to stop at a posted stop sign at the intersection, officials said.

Emergency officials said four buildings were evacuated Friday morning following a liquid oxygen leak on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus.
Hazardous materials crews with the Omaha Fire Department were called to the campus around 7:45 a.m.
"Because of the high humidity this morning and the cold temperature of that gas, it created a huge white cloud. That's how we found out we had the leak," said Nick Combs, UNMC maintenance director.

Aug. 20--The moral of this story: Be extra careful around industrial shredders.
A man at work in Doral found himself in a precarious situation Thursday after his arm got caught in such a machine. According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, about 5 p.m. the man was at a distribution center for ProLogix in the 8200 block of Northwest 21st Street when his limb got caught in a shredder the size of a truck.

Aug. 19--CHELAN -- An airplane and a helicopter were destroyed Wednesday afternoon when fire broke out in the hangar they were stored in at the Lake Chelan Airport.
The building was fully engulfed with the roof collapsing when firefighters arrived shortly after 4 p.m., said Tim Lemon, chief of Fire District 7 in Chelan. The fire was reported by a resident near the airport about three miles northeast of Chelan.
