Health Fair/Lipid Testing

By paul - Posted on 12 March 2010

What:
Chief Willard, CPT Donaldson and myself are excited to announce a CGFR
"Health Fair". This will consist of lipid testing, fasting blood glucose,
and physical fitness testing. You are strongly encouraged to participate
in any or all of the tests being offered. (The department is paying for
the testing!)

Why:
More Firefighters suffer line-of-duty deaths due to cardiovascular disease
each year than all other events combined. You can learn where you are
presently for some of the risk factors. Then we (your Peer Fitness
Trainers) will provide you with assistance to improve, and plan to re-test
those who desire to check their progress in about 6 months.

When:
Saturday & Sunday, 1 & 2 May, from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. (Attend either day,
and it will only take a few minutes.)

Where:
At Station 2.

Lipid Test Includes:
Cholesterol, total; high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol;
low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (calculation); triglycerides;
very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol (calculation)

Preparation:
You should be on a stable diet, ideally for two to three weeks prior to
collection of blood, and should fast for 12 to 14 hours before collection
of the specimen. That means nothing to eat or drink, except water.
