New Training Room Computer
The department purchased a new computer for the training room this week. The new computer has much more disk space and processing capacity than the one it is replacing that had been donated years before. There will be some new "features" incorporated into all the station computers in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to this page for additional information as it becomes available!
Covering the bases
Hat's off to everyone for pitching in to cover a busy Saturday afternoon! We were confronted with a variety of unusual events in short order Saturday, and many folks pitched in to handle them.
Our afternoon started off...
Burn Permit Required starting May 1
Starting May 1st, burn permits are required for borough residents engaging in controlled burns.
CGFR does participate in the program where fire departments issue those permits. We have those permits at the station and in the command vehicle.
Flooding
This afternoon (Wednesday 4/27/05) Phil and Megan headed to Salcha along with our boat to assist the residents in the flooding that's going on there.
In the days ahead we may be called upon by the borough to assist further out there. If you're available call the station to let us know.
Hail to the Chief!
Board President David Rohwer announced this morning that the Fire Chief search process has resulted in an agreement with Jackie Willard to come onboard as CGFR's new Fire Chief effective May 31st!!
Jack comes to us from Greats Falls, Montana, where he currently is Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention at the Montana Air National Guard base in Great Falls.
Jack & his wife Ann are no strangers to Alaska, having been stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base while he served in the Air Force some years ago.
Jack and Ann are anxious to make the move and jump right in to their new life in Fairbanks and at CGFR.
Many thanks must be extended to the members of the Board, staff and volunteers who served on the selection committee. Their tireless hours have culminated in the selection of Jack from among numerous qualified candidates. Thank you, committee members, for your contribution in this special assignment so important to the mission of CGFR!
Now it's time to freshen up the red carpet to roll out on May 31 and make Jack and Ann's transition to Fairbanks smooth and comfortable. Let's everyone do what we can to bring Chief Willard up to speed about how we do what we do around here!
see you on-scene
Live Fire Training A Success!
The live fire training exercise this weekend on Murphy Dome Road was a complete success!
New Kid on the Block
There's a New Kid on the Block and does she look good! CGFR's new rescue engine, Engine 45, funded in part by a FIRES Act grant, arrived in Fairbanks over the weekend and is in the process of being checked over in anticipation of being accepted and turned over to us on Friday. She made a quick sneak appearance at Station 2 on Monday her way to the Borough shop and should be back at the station in time for Tuesday's training. There's lots of work to do to get her fitted with equipment once the acceptance is completed so it will be a while before she goes online. In the meantime, stop by and check 'er out!
Stay tuned for info on driver training and the work party schedule for installing the equipment!
